Have you ever found yourself in a situation where someone is trying to continually argue with you? You know, they just won’t let it go, and they go on and on trying to fuel the argument. Ever wondered if there was a way out of the argument? There is. Here are 10 creative, and effective, ways to end an argument.
Put yourself in the other person’s shoes
When you put yourself in someone else’s shoes you can sort of understand their side of the argument. This doesn’t mean you have to agree with their view point, but it may give you a different perspective on the argument. This may make it easier to end it. There are always two sides to every story. You already know yours. Try to see it from where they stand and see if it makes a difference.
Listen to what the other person is saying
Instead of continually trying to interject your own point of view or opinion on the situation, give the other person a chance to say what they want to say without being cut off. The only way you can do this is to listen instead of talk. When you give someone the opportunity to voice their opinion, they will usually calm down. Again, this doesn’t mean that you have to agree with them. It just means that you’re willing to show them some respect, and that goes a long way when you’re looking for an effective way to end an argument.
Admit if you’re wrong
Let’s face it; no one is right all of the time. If you’re wrong, don’t let your pride get in the way, and allow the argument to rage on and fester. Admit you’re wrong, and watch how fast the argument ends.
Walk away
Yup. This tried and true method of ending an argument is still very effective. People have been using this method for years, and it’s one of the best ways to end an argument. Walking away also gives the chance to step back from the situation, and collect your thoughts rather than say something you may wind up regretting in the future. Walking away is not an act of cowardice, and it doesn’t mean the other person wins. It’s a display of self control that more people need to use.
Agree to disagree
As much as many people don’t believe it, there are some arguments that simply cannot be resolved. It wouldn’t matter how long you argued or how much evidence you gave to prove your case, the other person will never admit defeat. The only way to end the argument is to just agree that you both cannot agree, and call it a day.
Conflict is a natural part of life. One could argue that it is something that isn’t completely avoidable. How you handle conflict, however, is a choice. If you want to end an argument rather than carry on about it, try one of these 5 creative and effective ways to end an argument.
